The Vest Up campaign is officially ending on July 15, 2008. Please read our Latest Bookings for our most recent updates. We are hoping to purchase at least 2 more officer vests before we pack it up. If you would like to make a final tax deductible donation, please use the Paypal link to the right. Thanks to all who have supported our grassroots campaign!
Thanks to you, Vest Up will be purchasing five NOPD officer vests during the month of July 2007.
Given the escalation in violence, it is astounding to learn that
more than half of the officers patrolling New Orleans now do so
without this protection. Eighty percent of these dedicated officers
were – like so many others – rendered homeless, yet
no governmental funds have yet been expended for the purpose of
protecting them, and the only replacement vests received have been
the gift of private benefactors. In one district, a drawing was
held to determine which two officers would receive the vests donated
by a grateful local family!
It is the goal of Vest Up to ensure that every officer wins the
draw. To date the N.O.P.D. still lacks approximately 600 standard
and 12 canine vests. It is the dream of Vest Up to be able to supply
this need and to then extend our efforts throughout the Gulf Region,
to all law enforcement personnel affected. At nearly $500 per vest,
it is a tremendous endeavor; one that I would have never believed
possible if not for the benevolence and spirit that I witnessed
as a Katrina volunteer.
Your gift to Vest Up is tax deductible.
With the assistance of The Fraternal Order of Police we will be
advised as to where the vests are most urgently needed and together
we will assure their distribution.
I invite you to explore and participate on the Vest Up website,
and, if you will, aid the Vest Up cause by sending our site to your
local newspaper and media organizations, political representatives,
law enforcement agencies and friends. We are truly a grassroots
effort, dependent solely on our ability to get the word out.
Everyone is aware of the tragedy that befell the Gulf; few know
how they can still make a difference. Please join our volunteer
network and show your appreciation to the men, women and K-9s who
continue to need our support.
Gratefully,
Maura Rose Gallagher
